So finally, what really is good hair? I have heard someone say that good hair is hair that is on your head, meaning that if you have been blessed with hair, then it is good hair :-) You can be straight or curly and have thick or fine strands... if the hair is being cared for in side and out, it's 'good hair' to me. Good hair should be used to describe the state of your hair, kind of like having a good hair day versus having a bad hair day. But to say you have bad hair because it's curly or kinky is something else. People will see their natural hair as unmanageable when they have not adopted the correct maintenance methods and products that are right for the hair. Using products and methods that were made for one type of hair texture and using it for your different hair texture will make maintaining and styling the hair very difficult which could make for a frustrating process.
This year marks 10 years that I have been natural and relaxer free, so the release of a movie about "Good Hair" makes my "Hair Anniversary" that much more special because it's got everyone talking about hair, even though I believe the movie was scripted primarily for comedy. Now don't get me wrong, I know that Chris Rock's job is to make people laugh, which is why they spun what was originally a documentary into a bit of a comedy for the big screen. So I'm not quite sure how much of it I will leave the theater taking seriously, lol. I would however, love to see a Part 2 which focuses on women of other races and ethnicities.
Ultimately, I encourage black women and women of all races to celebrate their natural hair texture. Grow it out and learn to work with it. There's nothing wrong with choosing to get a Press 'N Curl, weave, or braided extensions... just be able to love and care for your hair as if there is no Press 'N Curl, weave, or braided extensions for you to fall back on. If you have a child or plan to, that child cannot withstand chemicals nor should he or she be subjected to flat irons or hot combs. Your child will thank you for learning how to deal with the hair he or she has.
