Natural Hair Break: Caring for your hair AFTER the weave…

Wow, I am forever missing my natural hair when it's weaved up!  As of this month I am back to natural, until my next weave... hey, I'm on a growth challenge here :-)

Many naturals make so many mistakes when it comes  to treating post weave hair (lol, I don't know why I have to term it as that, but I felt like it)... basically, caring for the natural hair after it's been in a weave.  You have to remember that covering your hair for over a month has robbed the hair of the proper moisture that it needs, its elasticity is stretched which stresses the hair strands, and not to mention free access to the oxygen that your scalp so desperately needs to stay healthy.  Of course we all do the right things to our hair while its under the weave... right??  Okay then!  So really all we're concerned about is making sure the natural hair gets its much needed moisture once the weave is out.

I decided to put together a series of pictures showing just that.  I hope these help :-)

btw, did I say I'm lovin' my natural??  Tee hee :-)

Normally I wouldn’t comment on posts but I felt that I had to as your writing style is actually good. You have broken down a tough area so that it easy to understand.

    Hi,
I have been natural for 4 mths. I recently had kinky twists extension for 6 wks. During the time I had the kinky twist, I would apply African Pride braid spray and Infusium 23 leave in to my hair. I have noticed since I have removed the extensions that my hair texture seems to have changed. I am noticing some straight ends and the rest of the hair spiral, coily shaped. Do you think my ends need to be trimmed. I was planning on trimming my ends at the 6 mth mark. Just curious to what is happening to my hair.

    Hey Shannon!
Congrats on your transitioning journey, because it truly is a journey. It
sounds like what you’re noticing is the difference between your natural hair
texture and your previously altered hair texture (relaxer or perm?). So as
your natural hair grows, you’ll start to notice more of your naturally coily
texture coming in as opposed to your previously altered hair. If you used
to perm, relax, texturize, press and/or flat iron your hair, that hair you
are growing out will be straighter than your natural new growth. There are
different ways to deal with this. One way is to do a “big chop” where you
cut off the majority of your hair and start from scratch, so to speak.
Another way is what you’re doing–wearing twist or braid extensions until
enough of your natural hair has grown out before cutting the hair. You can
choose to cut your ends little by little, maybe an inch every month or so
until finally all of the straight ends are gone. Hope this helps!
